JANELLE MONAE - BAD BOY'S SHINING STAR
Diddy probably summed it up best: “She is a true visionary, with an original sound and a mesmerizing presence. I can’t wait to watch the future unfold for Janelle.” Danity Kane can only pray the boss man would toss kind words like that about it. The person, Mr. Combs, much like the rest of the music industry, can’t stop gushing over is none other than 22nd century rock/R&B performer Janelle Monae.
Blessed with Andre 3000’s spunk, Tina Turner’s energy and Steven Spielberg’s imagination, Janelle is the kind of artist you’ll either laugh off as being way too weird or bow down to and call the next big thing. Diddy and longtime fans like OutKast’s Big Boi wholeheartedly suggest the latter. Roto Rooter can’t stop all the Internet leaks of Janelle’s bugged-out Metropolis EP right now. Her debut album won’t drop on Bad Boy until September, at the earliest. But it’s all good. Ceazdeprofit.blogspot.com has her now before the plutonium-powered bandwagon starts to get too crowded…
Janelle Monae - Violet Stars Happy Hunting
Name: Janelle Monae.
Influences: It’d be easy to just say inventive artists like Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley are Janelle’s inspirations, but it’s deeper than that. Monae also has a deep appreciation for stage productions and musicals like The Wizard of Oz, which actually might make them bigger influences on the artist than Bjork and James Brown ever were.
On Why The Time Is Now For The World To Know Janelle Monae: "Well, I’m really not in control of when people are ready to hear something or ready to be exposed to something this different. I just feel like it’s that time. I feel like 2008 is a time –you can see it in politics and I think you’ll see it in music- for different voices to be heard and more diverse things to be promoted. I think that there’s a movement that’s happening, whether I’m in it or not, that’s going to continue to happen. It has been happening, but people are just now catching on to it. That’s a question you’ll have to ask God. He has most definitely told me that this is the time. I’m just following the lead."
On Fighting The Mainstream: "Actually, I don’t have to do anything. I think right now I’m pretty well received. All I have to do is continue to stay true to my values. I have a responsibility to creating art and coming up with new concepts and ideas. And I have a responsibility to my community, especially young girls. I really hate talking a lot, so I try to lead by example. By doing that, that’s all I can do, you know? I don’t like to marginalize networks like BET or MTV, for that matter, or us as an African-American culture or a Chinese culture. I don’t marginalize people. I always tell myself that people are very open-minded to new concepts and ideas, but they don’t know what they wanna hear until they hear it. I feel like I’ll be heard and I feel like I’ll be seen."
On Being A Good Example For Black Girls: "That’s been a lifelong thing of mine. I grew up in Kansas. I grew up in an environment, to be politically correct, that was a little disadvantaged. By that, there were not a lot of resources at my disposal. I’m not complaining about [that], by any means. But because of that, it forced me to search outside of my neighborhood. To always ask questions. It motivated me to ensure that I was being a strong leader. I’m somewhat of a rock in my family to people twice my age. They look to me, which is a blessing, for advice on certain things that they know good and let they should know as right and wrong. For me, there are so many young girls that were just headed for self-destruction, whether it was getting pregnant by a dope dealer or not reading, to selling sex to get the things they needed. I saw that, and I saw the downfall of that whole movement with young girls. I always knew I had to do something slightly different to show them that we don’t all have to take the same routes to become successful. There are other options. As an artist, I have a bigger responsibility to it because, I think, artists are a lot more influential than politicians are. One song can change somebody’s life. One girl’s message can change somebody’s life."
On Early Musical Memories: "When I was 10 or 11, I formed a duo with one of my best friends. I was also a part of this group called The Wierdos. We most definitely were trying to make a statement in Kansas. We raised certain questions and provoked certain emotions in all the people who were walking dead back home. I was in and out of talent shows, competing and I was heavily involved in musical theater. It was the one thing I was religious about. Everyday I would go home and practice and sing. A lot of it just had to do with me trying to escape my environment. Drugs really took over my family. We lost a lot of things, a lot of materialistic things—as well as a lot of time. My parents lost a lot of time to certain drugs like crack and different things like that. I grew around all those things. Music was my escapism. Hard work was just instilled in me. I think the gift of song and the gift of art has such a huge purpose. You don’t even really know how powerful you as an artist can be until you’re in it. Growing up in that environment, I got a chance to hone my craft. I had nothing but time. I did just that. I knew music could take me out of Kansas, and it did. I’ve started my own record label, The Wondaland Arts Society. We released an independent project last year. We’ve been able to, as a company and a team of creative artists, stay true to our innovative ideas and challenge ourselves and remember it’s up to us to inspire and influence as many people as we come in contact with."
On The Characteristics Of A Janelle Monae Fan: "That’s a good question. It’s one I don’t think I can answer really. Every time someone says –I do it myself- this person isn’t gonna be really into what we’re doing or isn’t going to like the way I dance on stage, I get proven wrong. I have fans from 78-year-old white Jewish men to nine-year-old little girls whose fathers are executives at record labels. It’s very broad. When you come to my performances, the audience is very diverse. That’s something I’ve always prayed for but I didn’t know it could really happen. Knowing that it’s true and that it does exist, I don’t marginalize people. I don’t categorize people and say my demographic is this way. I think the one thing that they have in common is that they wanna dance and wanna have fun. I think thriving individuals searching for answers. It takes somebody who’s open-minded, but not somebody who’s just weird or different. I have supporters who drink and smoke weed and go to Hip Hop clubs to older white men and women. I just thank God for that."
On Other Gifts She’s Proud To Have: "I think God has most definitely blessed me with the gift of discernment. As a young African American female, as a female in general in the music industry, you need that. He’s led me to know and feel out certain situations and know what’s good and who’s right to be around me. Who I should stay away from? What things I should stay away from. I’m really anchored in my morals and my values. I don’t ever get too big-headed. I always remember that I can be as funky as can be but I can’t get too big-headed. I’ve avoided a lot of situations by just saying no to certain bad opportunities. Just waiting and being patient and knowing that I’m not in control. Something higher is in control. At all times I must acknowledge that and stay humble and stay true to the gift of art that I was blessed with."
What Makes Her Worthy?: Because there’s “new sound” and then there’s so-crazy-you-wonder-what-kind-of-barbituate-the-person-was-on-when-they-recorded-it new sound.

DMX Arrested In Miami

According to the Associated Press, DMX is currently behind bars in Miami.
The 37-year-old rapper was picked up around 1:30 PM on Monday (June 23) due to an arrest warrant for having no valid driver's license.
X was taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Institute, where bail was set at $500. He remained behind bars until 5:30 PM.
Over the past several years, DMX has gotten in trouble with the law for a slew of driving-related incidents. Most recently, however, the rapper pleaded not guilty to felony drug possession and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges in Arizona, as a result of a raid on his house.
Ralph McDanieles To Host Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival
Hip Hop pioneer and innovator Ralph "Uncle Ralph" McDaniels has agreed to serve as the host for the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival for the third consecutive year.
McDaniels is most well known as the host of Video Music Box which made its debut 25 years ago.
"A student of Hip Hop will know that you cannot underestimate the importance of Ralph McDaniels and Video Music Box. He saw the need to archive and document our culture before MTV, and before YouTube," Wes Jackson, festival chair and executive director said in a statement. "Without him, I am not sure Hip Hop as an art form or as a business would be the multi- billion dollar industry that it is. We are his children and the Festival is a continuation of the trailblazing spirit manifested by Ralph and all of our other elders."
The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival will take place on July 12 at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, but other events will take place the weekend of the festival including a film series, family day, and of course an after party.
Headlining BHHF this year will be KRS-One and DJ Premier; other performers include Fresh Daily, 88-Keys, Buckshot, J. Period, and more.

Ready to Take the Plunge
Janet Jackson and mini-boo Jermaine Dupri have gone public with their intention to start a family together. JD was spotted at a dinner party in West Hollywood over the weekend. When asked about he and Janet’s baby plans, he said:
“‘Yeah, soon. Right after the tour.’ Jackson recently announced she’ll be on the road this fall. The 42-year-old pop icon, who has been married and divorced twice, once quipped that she was ‘allergic to marriage.’ Dupri is reportedly so excited to procreate with Jackson, he doesn’t care if it’s a boy or a girl. ‘It really doesn’t matter, Janet would be a great mom. She was around so many brothers and sisters all her life, so she’s got to know what that is [like]. And her mom is a great mother.’”
Awww. How sweet. Pretty soon we can expect the pitter patter of pint-sized musical geniuses running amok. And speaking of happy couples. Timbaland and Monique Idlett tied the knot this weekend in a event of formal proportions.

Remy Ma's Shooting Victim Sues Rapper For $10 Mil!
The suit claims Remy's former label, Universal Music and Sure Shot Recordings received "financial profit and economic benefit from the unlawful, violent, and anti-social conduct" of the rapper.
Barnes-Joesph also seeks compensation from downtown Manhattan restaurant, Pizza Bar, for continuing to serve the Bronx-bred rapper alcohol after she was already intoxicated. Remy and the victim were partying at the restaurant before the shooting occurred.
In addition the suit claims that Barnes-Joesph "suffered and still suffers great physical and mental pain and has been emotionally damaged," due to her altercation with Remy and has yet to return to work stating that the "injuries inflicted upon her by [Remy] are permanent in nature."
Filed in the Bronx, New York, over the weekend, the suit's focus on suing Universal and Sure Shot is based on the belief that they profited from the publicity of her trial. Barnes-Joesph expects to also reap the benefits of any additional gains.
"Any and all financial profit and economic benefit which the [defendants] gained and continues to gain from their promotion and publicizing of the shooting of [Makeda] is gained at [her] detriment and therby entitles [her] to damages from the [defendants] in an amount no less that the total amount of any and all monetary profit earned," the statement reads.
No word yet from either Remy's lawyers or representatives from Universal, Sure Shot or the Pizza Bar.
As previously reported by SOHH, Barnes-Joesph originally hit Remy with an $80 million lawsuit last January, but decided to drop it in until the verdict in the case was announced.

Chappelle And Tucker Kickin It!

Comedic legends Chris Tucker and Dave Chappelle were caught having a blast Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.

Maybe the two were talking about working on a new project together. Or perhaps, moving to Africa. Tucker recently took a trip to Ethiopia which he described as “…my favorite African country. Because of the history, it is just beautiful and the people are beautiful and nice.”
We all know Chappelle went on hiatus in South Africa after walking away from Season 3 of the Chappelle Show.
Whatever the two were talking about they seemed to be having a great time and that’s really what life is all about. Laughing and having a good time.

Intelligent people are "less likely to believe in god"…
…according to a new study at Ulster University.
WARNING: The following article is for open minded thinkers only. Please precede with caution if your belief system is fragile…
By Graeme Paton, Education Editor, telegraph.co.uk
Professor Richard Lynn, emeritus professor of psychology at Ulster University, said many more members of the “intellectual elite” considered themselves atheists than the national average.
A decline in religious observance over the last century was directly linked to a rise in average intelligence, he claimed.
But the conclusions - in a paper for the academic journal Intelligence - have been branded “simplistic” by critics.
Professor Lynn, who has provoked controversy in the past with research linking intelligence to race and sex, said university academics were less likely to believe in God than almost anyone else.
A survey of Royal Society fellows found that only 3.3 per cent believed in God - at a time when 68.5 per cent of the general UK population described themselves as believers.
A separate poll in the 90s found only seven per cent of members of the American National Academy of Sciences believed in God.
Professor Lynn said most primary school children believed in God, but as they entered adolescence - and their intelligence increased - many started to have doubts.
He told Times Higher Education magazine: “Why should fewer academics believe in God than the general population? I believe it is simply a matter of the IQ. Academics have higher IQs than the general population. Several Gallup poll studies of the general population have shown that those with higher IQs tend not to believe in God.”
He said religious belief had declined across 137 developed nations in the 20th century at the same time as people became more intelligent.
But Professor Gordon Lynch, director of the Centre for Religion and Contemporary Society at Birkbeck College, London, said it failed to take account of a complex range of social, economic and historical factors.
“Linking religious belief and intelligence in this way could reflect a dangerous trend, developing a simplistic characterisation of religion as primitive, which - while we are trying to deal with very complex issues of religious and cultural pluralism - is perhaps not the most helpful response,” he said.
Dr Alistair McFadyen, senior lecturer in Christian theology at Leeds University, said the conclusion had “a slight tinge of Western cultural imperialism as well as an anti-religious sentiment”.
Dr David Hardman, principal lecturer in learning development at London Metropolitan University, said: “It is very difficult to conduct true experiments that would explicate a causal relationship between IQ and religious belief. Nonetheless, there is evidence from other domains that higher levels of intelligence are associated with a greater ability - or perhaps willingness - to question and overturn strongly felt institutions.”
Have your say: Is faith linked to intelligence?

Drugs Vs. Winehouse: Give Up Drugs or Die

Singer Amy Winehouse has lung damage and an irregular heart beat caused by smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes and will have to wear an oxygen mask unless she stops taking drugs, according to her father Mitch.
"The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs, it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her," Mitch Winehouse told The Sunday Mirror. "There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She has 70 percent lung capacity."
The embattled Winehouse, passed out on June 16 after signing autographs for fans outside of her north London home and has remained in the hospital since.
Despite her numerous appearances in tabloids and the news, Winehouse is estimated to be worth around $20 million and has received a plethora of awards for her album Back To Black.
As of today, Winehouse still plans on performing at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday celebration.
